DID YOU KNOW?

You can raise so much money just by focusing on READING!

  • Kids focus on reading instead of selling a product.
  • For every dollar raised, one minute will be read!
  • Even friends or family out of town can support your reading efforts.
  • All the money and reading minutes are handled and tracked for you – online!
  • We offer 4 fundraising services! Our “School Read-A-Thon” fundraising programs (choice of two) is designed to give students the chance to raise money for their schools for a variety of reasons. Our “Classroom Read-A-Thon” fundraising programs (choice of two) is designed to give classrooms the chance to raise money for field trips, special art supplies, etc.

An Annual Literacy Survey done in the UK, back in 2018, reports that students who have participated in a Read-A-Thon compared to students who had not taken part in a Read-A-Thon:

  • Enjoy reading more.
  • Are more likely to read something in their free time daily.
  • Have on average higher perceptions of their reading ability.
  • Read a wider variety of materials, such as poems, non-fiction, fiction, lyrics, text messages and websites, in their free time at least once a month.
  • Have more positive attitudes towards reading, for example they are more likely to agree that reading is cool; more likely to agree that they carry on reading even when they find it difficult; and more likely to agree that there are lots of things they want to read.
  • Are more likely to use the school library
  • Report higher life satisfaction.

Q & A

Q: What happens if our class doesn’t read all of our minutes within allocated time frame?
A: No problem! The winner is calculated based on which class raises the most money; therefore, if it takes you a month, it takes you a month! 🙂 The program will stay open for at least a month. Please contact me at info@mindgrowtheducation.com if you need the program to stay open for longer than a month.

Q: Why is incorporating one of the reading log programs important?
A: Children are very motivated by the reading log programs, as they are excited to see where they will end up after having read all of their minutes, and the program is a great fun way to explore Canada or the World from a variety of perspectives: artistic, cultural, historical, geographical, political and/or economical.

Q: I’m a very busy teacher. What would be my commitment to this fundraiser?
A: For the “School Read-A-Thons”: You only have two minor commitments to do: 1) Read with your class on a daily basis and 2) Sign in to your teacher account to log in your minutes once a day (preferably after school). Leave the rest to us, Mind Growth Education and the appointed organizer for your school.

For the “Classroom Read-A-Thons”: You only have three minor commitments to do: 1) Read with your class on a daily basis, 2) Make sure each student gets their login information for their own Mind Growth Education account, 3) Assign reading homework so your students can log in their own minutes at home or at school. Leave the rest to us, Mind Growth Education!

Q: What are some great ways to make the “Read-A-Thon” a very successful fundraiser?
A: Here are some ways to make your school’s “Read-A-Thon” more appealing and boost participation are:
* Set up a photo booth with props.
* Try convincing your principal or vice-principal (or any teacher) to step out of their comfort zones to help bring in more money by taking part in a silly stunt at the end of your “Read-A-Thon”.
* Display the interactive master map on your school’s hallway tv (if you have one).
* Organize a special author appearance.
* Organize a themed family reading day (morning, afternoon or all day).
* Organize a reading corner for the two weeks that will include an easy reading-related craft like bookmark- making, etc., comfy reading spots like bean-bags, etc.
* Organize a book swap day.

Q: What if I run out of materials (posters, bookmark templates, door signs, etc.)?
A: Please email your Mind Growth Education representative and we will send you more material at no charge OR download an electronic version from our online shop.

Q: Are people who don’t live locally able to donate?
A: Absolutely! Send them the fundraising page url, and they can donate online. Please note that the charitable tax receipt is for Canadian jurisdiction only, but the donation can be given from any donor that has a credit card.

Q: Do you accept cash donations?
We are trying to avoid having to handle and manage cash, and would prefer to take donations through the online website. The fundraising site provides the charitable donation tax receipting, which simplifies things immensely for the Parent Advisory Councils or the School Councils.

However, if you do not require a tax receipt, and are not able to donate online, you can put the donation into an envelope labelled “Read-A-Thon donation” with your child’s name and teacher’s name in your child’s planner for your teacher to put in your council’s mailbox, or you can directly put the envelope yourself in the council’s mailbox near the school’s office. Note that the cash donations will not be added to the tally until the end of the fundraiser.
